ホロコーストを扱った映画は多々ありますが、ここまでユニークにポップに描いた映画は初めてではないでしょうか？
母親と二人と暮らすいじめられっ子のジョジョは空想の友達アドルフヒトラーの助言を聞きながらナチスの青少年集団で立派な兵士になるために訓練する日々を送っています。
ある日、家の隠し部屋に母親がかくまっていたユダヤ人の少女の存在に気付きます。
少女と触れ合ううちにユダヤ人でもなんら自分と変わらない生身の人間と知り、ナチスの教えを信じていたジョジョのナチスへの忠誠心は揺らいぐとともに、空想の友達アドルフヒトラーの鼓舞も信じられなくなっていきます。密かに反ナチで少女を匿う母親役のスカーレット・ヨハンソンとユダヤ人の少女を演じたトーマス・マッケンジーが素晴らしい。
オープンニングのビートルズをはじめ、トム・ウエィツ、デビット・ボーイなどのポップスが心地良く響き、従来のホロコースト映画とは全く違う趣向でナショナリズムを問います。
